Abstract

Body temperature may change markedly during anesthesia, usually falling during general anesthesia. Fall of body temperature may produce various physiologic changes. Thus the values and necessity of temperature measurement under anesthesia is now well established, especially in the pediatric patient and cardiac or pulmonary operation.
The authors measured the esophageal and rectal temperature during open thoracotomy under general anesthesia.
The results were as follows:
1) During first hour after anesthesia, body temperature was markedly decreased. There were 0.52¡¾0.30¢ªC at esophagus and 0.49¡¾0.30¢ªC at rectum. Mean temperature change for each one hour was 0.19¢ªC /hr at esophagus and 0.21¢ªC /hr at rectum.
2) Temperature at start and end of anesthesia. Esophageal temperature was decreased from 36.5¡¾ 0.5¢ªC to 35.8¡¾0.7¢ªC. Rectal temperature was decreased from 36.7¡¾0.6¢ªC to 35.8¡¾0.8¢ªC.
